What is COVID-19?

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a family of zoonotic viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Common symptoms include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. 

The current outbreak involves a new strain of coronavirus (COVID-19) that has not been previously identified in humans (World Health Organization).

Best Practices for Avoiding Illness

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol content).
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
