Biographical / Historical Information: James Parker Irwin was attorney, teacher and farmer who resided near Bardwell, Ballard County, Kentucky during the 1870s. He served during the Civil War as a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry Regiment, Company C. He was captured and later imprisoned at Johnson’s Island, Ohio. Following the war, he resided with family members in Ballard County (later Carlisle County) where he briefly practiced law, farmed and taught at the Lee’s School.

 

Scope and Content: Collection consists of a photocopied diary kept by James Parker Irwin of Bardwell, Kentucky from May 6, 1874 to July 25, 1875. The diary offers detailed accounts of his daily activities and significant events he witnessed or recalled during his life. Included with the diary are a series of articles written by Virginia Jewell for the Carlisle County News in 1991 that included excerpts from the diary.
