Biographical / Historical Information: Thomas R. McBeath was the regimental quartermaster of the 27th Kentucky Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. He was born at Monticello, Kentucky on March 18, 1839. Prior to the war, he resided in Leitchfield, Kentucky where he attended school and later taught. He began to study law in the spring of 1861. In October of 1861, he assisted in recruiting Company A of the 27th Kentucky Infantry. When the regiment was organized at Rochester, Kentucky on December 16, 1861, he was appointed regimental quartermaster. He held that position until the unit was mustered out of service on March 29, 1865.Following the war, McBeath practiced law and in August of 1880 he was elected judge of the Kentucky’s Sixth Judicial District.    
 
Scope and Content: Collection consists of a photocopied letter from Thomas R. McBeath to “Miss Eva” from Murfreesboro, Tennessee on August 9, 1862. The letter mentions relatives fighting for the Confederacy and that camp life was tedious but at present quiet.
