Biographical / Historical Information: Bettie Jones was born on April 3, 1850 at Paducah, Kentucky. In early August of 1864, Brigadier General E. A. Paine ordered the banishment or radical Southern sympathizers to Canada. She escaped to Indiana the night before the order was to be carried out. After the war, she married Abram Boyd and relocated to Memphis, Tennessee. She later moved Los Angeles, California where she died on July 3, 1938.

Scope and Content: Collection consists of photocopied transcripts of a letter written by Bettie Jones Boyd in 1937 describing her escape from Paducah, Kentucky in early August of 1864 prior to Brigadier General E. A. Paine’s banishment order of radical Southern sympathizers to Canada. Included with the transcripts is a copy the original notification and order written by General Paine and a copy of a program issued for the “Blue and Gray Grand Soldiers Reunion at Paducah on Wednesday, October 19th 1887”.
