Biographical / Historical Information: The John Hopson Stamps and his family arrived in Calloway County, Kentucky in 1856 from Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Stamps’ wife, Mary C. Hardy Stamps, was the daughter of Elisha Hardy who resided in Calloway County since the 1830s. Elisha Hardy served as the first county judge and was elected the county’s representative to the Kentucky State Legislature in 1857. John B. Stamps, son of John Hospon, served with the 7th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War and wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. The Hardy and Stamps families farmed in Calloway County for several generations.
Scope and Content: Collection consists of photocopied correspondence related to the Stamps family of Calloway County, Kentucky from 1847 to 1913. The letters describe family activities and experiences, mention birth, deaths and marriages and discuss regional and national events from the 1850s to the 1890s. The bulk of the letters were composed in Calloway, Caldwell and Trigg Counties of Kentucky, Stewart County of Tennessee, Pittsylvania County of Virginia and Collins County, Texas. Noteworthy correspondence include a letter from Captain Timothy H. Stamps of the 13th Virginia Light Artillery Battalion after a visit to Richmond on May 19, 1861 and several letters from Private John B. Stamps of the 7th Kentucky Calvary Regiment while at Columbus, Kentucky and various military posts near Corinth, Mississippi from December of 1861 to May of 1862.
