Biographical / Historical Information: A. R. Boone was a county judge in Graves County, Kentucky in 1860. He was elected to the Kentucky State Legislature in 1861 but resigned after receiving threats of arrest for his pro-southern views. Following the Civil War, Boone was elected circuit judge, served one term as United States Representative and was appointed railroad commissioner of the State. J. E. Anderson may possibly be Ervin Anderson who was the former county clerk for Graves County prior to the Civil War and later United States Representative from 1869 to 1871.


Scope and Content: Collection consists of a photocopied transcript of a letter written to Andrew R. Boone from J. E. Anderson of Mayfield, Kentucky on July 22, 1860. The letter describes political activities in Mayfield during a local meeting of the Democratic Party. He also mentions a meeting among the community’s unionist supporters.
